Boardmasters: Sun, Sea and Savoretti

October 15, 2016

Now I'm not a festival goer I have to admit. The thought of being stuck in the middle of a mosh pit at Glastonbury is certainly not what I'd want to do with my summer evenings. However as music festivals go, Boardmasters has to be one of the coolest and most underrated. Set high up on the headlands of Watergate bay in Newquay Boardmasters overlooks some of the best ocean surf the UK has to offer. The setting could not be more perfect for a day of laid back music and festival food.

A highlight of the event has to be seeing this guy. The one and only Mr Jack Savoretti. For those who dont know who he is, he is a Italian-English solo acoustic singer. I was introduced to his music through my sister and his music soon became anthems for the summer. Playing songs from his 4th studio album 'Written in the Scars' his music was the perfect match for the sunshine drenched afternoon.

Next up on the spectacular Corona sunsets stage was nineties revival duo Ekkah. Comprised of two Rebecca's; Wilson and Pennington, Ekkah had an electro pop vibe about them, fusing fun disco beats with nineties pop.  The pair hail from Birmingham and met at high school where they formed a grunge rock band. Dusting off their rock and roll edge for a more grown up disco vibe and hitting the festival tour across the summer months seems like an inspired decision for the girls with their recently release tracks 'Last chance to dance' blasting out over the Boardmaster's sound system.

To round the event off the final band was Catfish and The Bottlemen. Now I'd heard a few of their tracks on the radio but weren't that familiar with their back catalogue of music. They are an indie rock band from Wales and gave a great set to a packed festival crowd. I have to admit when I got home I downloaded their albums and singles 'Rango' and 'Soundcheck' are on my photo editing playlist.
